Equest invites you to join our Hooves for Heroes program! This program is devoted to all active duty service men and women, members of the Guard or Reserve, or honorably discharged veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces and their immediate family members seeking better functioning and improved wellness. We are currently offering two components to our veterans’ program, Therapeutic Horsemanship and Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy.
All active duty service men and women, members of the Guard or Reserve, or honorably discharged veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces and their immediate family members seeking better functioning and improved wellness. Specifically:
TH Eligibility: Service members, spouses, and primary caregivers.
EFP Eligibility: Service members, immediate family members (including children), primary caretakers
Hippotherapy Eligibility: Service members only.
Who can participate?
Equestrian activities are beneficial to a wide variety of physical, cognitive, emotional diagnoses. Please note that there are some conditions where mounted activity is contraindicated including uncontrolled seizures. Equest riding instructors and therapists will work with the participant to determine an appropriate activity that will benefit the client.
Additionally, in keeping with our veterinarians’ recommendations, the following rider weight limits have been established. There height/weight limits will be enforced for all riders.
Maximum weight: Under 5’0” tall 150lbs
5’0” - 5’6” tall 175lbs
5’7” – 6’0” tall 200lbs
6’1” - 6’5” tall 250lbs
For the safety of our riders, volunteers and staff, we require that all riders who weigh over 65lbs be able to sit on a vaulting barrel and balance themselves by holding on to the handle with both hands for 30 seconds. Sitting balance will be assessed during the initial evaluation.
We ask all riders and clients new to Equest to schedule an initial evaluation before being confirmed in a class or therapy session. The evaluation is a time for us to meet the rider/client and the family and begin to establish individual goals and determine how best to serve each individual’s needs. Evaluations are unmounted and generally take 30 to 60 minutes.
