Horse Donations
As our therapy horses age, it becomes necessary to retire many of them to loving homes. Retirement leaves us with empty stalls, and each empty stall means that many disabled riders will be unable to ride until a suitable replacement is found and accepted into our program.
Each horse donated to Equest must:
- Be unflappable (nothing bothers them)
- Be sound
- Be able to walk/trot/canter smoothly
- Have a solid back
- Be forgiving of an inexperienced rider
If Equest instructors initially approve a horse being offered for donation, the horse will be taken to Equest for a 4-6 week trial period before officially being accepted into the program.

The ideal therapy horse is sound, has an unflappable temperament, and an unlimited heart. Our horses have come from many different backgrounds including show horses, polo, police work, school horses, racing, family pets and fox hunting. The average age of an Equest horse is 17 years.
While we need all sizes and shapes to serve our riders, we especially need sturdy horses, 15-16.1 hands that can accommodate large adolescents and adults. Equest has a 90% rider return rate and as our riders grow so does the need for larger horses.
